CHAPTER

10

To shower after several hours of sitting in a car- not exactly strenuous. But Mia didn’t care. She had a routine, and by God her nightly hot shower was part of her routine. Glad she’d abandoned during her teens the custom of having a dresser for her long hair, she used the supplied hair dryer, styling her hair into a simple braid, freshening her makeup again with simple clear gloss and a coating of mascara.

When she emerged from the shower she found her smaller travel case on the bed, a change of clean clothing laid out for her, pressed. Of course the proprietress wouldn’t allow a Princess- and their future Queen- to attend to herself too much, despite Mia having ushered them out of the room with an adamant, if polite, refusal of body servants.

She was sitting in the chair in front of the window, her book in her lap, when a light tap sounded on the door. Bear shifter nose picked out the scent of roasted meat and vegetables, hot coffee. And cinnamon apples which she hoped meant dessert.

“Come in,” she called.

Margaret opened the door, wheeling in a cart, Chan behind her.

“I thought you might like company for dinner, Highness,” he said. “Though if you prefer to eat alone that’s understandable.”

And offend her only Guard with her apparent snobbishness? Not likely. She knew Casakraine royalty had a bit of a reputation for being fussy. She’d have to work hard to change that impression.

“I’d enjoy the company,” she said. “Besides, it’s more time to pick your brains.”

He inclined his head, watching as Margaret transformed the rolling cart into a small table.

“That’s clever,” Mia said. “I’ve never seen anything like that before.”

Margaret beamed. “Nor would you. My brother designed it, Highness. He’s handy with tools and the like.”

“Very talented. Where did he go to school?”

The manager shook her head. “We couldn’t afford schooling. He’s self-taught, books mostly and the Internet now that we have the tower up.”

Miahela’s brow rose. Every Casakrainian who wanted one received a higher education. “Is that common? The state doesn’t subsidize university?”

“We haven’t had the resources, and we’re still a rather agricultural based economy, most of our businesses small.” Chan took a seat as he spoke. “There hasn’t really been a need for higher education.”

“A product like this, though, brought to an international market, might generate quite an income.”

“It might,” Margaret agreed. She finished setting tableware and uncovering dishes. “This platter here is a sampling of little local dishes.”

Mia plucked a small smoked fish and popped it into her mouth, followed it with a pickled pepper stuffed with some kind of savory cheese. The flavors were just the right balance of smoke, spicy and sour.

“I could eat a bowl of these doing paperwork,” Mia said, eyeing the platter. A tiny pastry went into her mouth next. This one was filled with sweetened cream and raisins soaked in some kind of alcohol with chopped nuts. “These bites are perfect for travel. I don’t suppose…”

Margaret covered her mouth with her hand, hiding a smile.
